Can any of your contributors inform me whether there is any truth in the story, that Benjamin West plucked up a pre-Raphaelitish spirit, and determined to paint one of his historical pictures (I have heard, the Death of Wolfe) with the figures in their proper costume, and not as ancient Romans, and that he was the first heretic in this direction of the English painters?
